               POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Oklahoma State University, is seeking qualified individuals to work on a research project funded through the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center (South Central-CASC). The research aims to understand the nexus of climate change and prescribed fire risk analysis, tolerance, and communication.

 

This post-doctoral position is supported through the Postdoctoral Climate Adaptation Scholars (CAS) Program established by the National and Regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (NRCASC).  The CAS program is established to support management-relevant research and scientific synthesis of emerging research needs related to climate impacts on fish, wildlife, and ecosystems.  The objective of the CAS Program is to provide regional-to-national syntheses of climate change impacts on fire regimes, fire management, and fire response; explore resulting impacts on fish, wildlife and ecosystems; and provide the scientific research necessary to help managers adapt to these changes.

 

The position at Oklahoma State University will lead to regionally focused research that aims to conduct an assessment of: (1) the state of the science on how climate change is currently part of the prescribed fire management strategies used across our region and other parts of the U.S.; (2) what elements of successful strategies can be transferrable across regions and what elements must be place-based; and (3) the implications of these strategies/elements for natural resource management and climate change adaptation efforts in the south-central U.S.  As part of a national cohort of postdoctoral Scholars, the fellow will also engage in national-scale research and training.  This will include participation in a national synthesis research effort, where fellows will collaborate with members of the NRCASC network to produce national synthesis products, as well as regular training, professional development, and mentoring opportunities as part of the CAS program.  In addition to research duties, collaborations with the CAS cohort, and interactions with natural resource, fire, or agriculture managers, the successful candidate must manage data and metadata for the project following USGS protocols, document research status through regular reporting, and complete other organizational duties as assigned in a professional and timely manner.

 

Salary for this position is $60,000 plus standard benefits (excluding retirement).  Funding is also available for travel to meet with collaborators and present at scientific conferences.

 

Required qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in human dimensions of natural resources, natural resource economics, human geography, conservation social science or a related field; demonstrated experience conducting research that results in peer reviewed publications; and demonstrated experience working directly with stakeholders on summarizing technical information in an accessible and useable manner, communicating information to and from stakeholders, and collaborating effectively across stakeholders with distinct interests.  Applicants having ability to speak Spanish are especially encouraged to apply.

MS. Level Graduate Research Assistantship in Economics and Human Dimensions of Wildlife (Filled)

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCE ECOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT, OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY

 

The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Oklahoma State University, is seeking qualified individuals to work on a research project that aims to evaluate current recreational use on Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) managed public lands. Contingent upon funding, this work will establish a model displaying visitor satisfaction of Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Oklahoma. The position will be filled at the M.S. level. The purpose of the proposed research is to determine visitor preference for and use of Wildlife Management Areas in Oklahoma to better inform current management practices and future land acquisitions by ODWC. The economic impact of these managed areas on surrounding communities will also be explored.

PhD Graduate Research Assistantship in Natural Resource Social Science (Filled)

The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Oklahoma State University, is seeking qualified individuals to work on a research project examining enhancing livestock production from rangelands in the Great Plains. The position is funded by USDA-NIFA and will be filled at the Ph.D. level.

 

Research topic:  The successful candidate will conduct a social science inquiry to understand the factors that influence landowners’ BMP (best management practices) adoption behavior such as patch burning and others. The proposed research will involve use of Best-Worst Choice (BWC) and structural equation modelling (SEM). The candidate will have classwork training opportunity from the departments of agricultural economics, sociology, and geography at Oklahoma State University.
